My introduction to the Swedish punk band, The Hives was their 2000 release Veni Vidi Vicious and from the onset of the record I was securely buckled in for the raucous and exciting ride in store with their high intensity and catchy hooks. With their added personal flair, the band has always dressed in black tie affair of some form and has kept that appearance consistent now nearly 30 years in their existence. In August the band released their sixth album, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons and since has made a loud splash back into the scene that has sorely missed their energetic presence.

Bottom Lounge was the perfect intimate setting for the band’s return through Chicago. The show was sold out and the room packed to the gills seemingly to all the band’s fan club members based in town who were eager to see their favorite sharply dressed punks. From the get go clearly the feelings were mutual as lead singer Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist was high kicking and sharing his mic with the crowd to sing along repeatedly. This many years later none of these guys have lost a beat and definitely put on a performance everyone should have included on their bucket list to see.
