Streaming giant Netflix has landed another big one with regards stand-up comedy. Kevin James is the latest comedian to honor the on-demand service with a new stand-up special. The special, which has yet to reveal a title, is expected to hit the VOD platform sometime in 2018.
According to THR, James will reportedly film the material for his forthcoming Netflix special later this year. The results will mark the Kevin Can Wait star’s first special since the 2001 Comedy Central release Sweat the Small Stuff.
Netflix has undoubtedly become the go-to place for all things stand-up. In 2017 alone we’ve seen specials from the likes of Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, Amy Schumer, Trevor Noah, Mike Birbiglia, Christela Alonzo, Neal Brennan, Jen Kirkman and more. Probably most mind-blowing of all, thus far this year, was the double release of specials – Deep in the Heart of Texas and The Age of Spin – from everybody’s favorite Prince impersonator Dave Chappelle, which came earlier this week.
James’ forthcoming special is the latest development from the comedian’s budding relationship with Netflix, which last year prompted the release of the action/comedy feature True Memoirs Of An International Assassin. The King of Queens star is also expected to appear in the Adam Sandler vehicle Sandy Wexler, debuting on the service next month.
James joins a list of heavy hitters — Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Tracy Morgan, Sarah Silverman, Louis C.K. and Chappelle (who has one more in the works) — all who are expected to debut future stand-up specials on Netflix. With the streaming service promising a new stand-up special every week for the remainder of the year 2017, there should be no shortage of comedy for the foreseeable future.
