On Sept. 13 via Lookin’ For My Denim Records/Thirty Tigers, actor-comedian-writer John Early is set to release the album version of his critically-acclaimed and utterly-hilarious 2023 HBO comedy special, Now More Than Ever. Today, fans get a sneak peak of what’s in store as Early has released a segment from his special featuring his impeccable cover of Britney Spears’ “Overprotected,”
“You guys,” Early said with a sigh at the top of the track. “I think just with everything that’s going on in the world right now, we should do some Britney.”
He proceeds to “take requests” until one fan shouts out the third single from Britney’s third album. Joined by his band, The Lemon Squares, Early performs the track flawlessly, hitting every flourish.
“Overprotected is underrated,” said Early in a statement. “The rare Britney single that didn’t really pop off in America, except for in my childhood bedroom. I chose it because it has a secret rebellious rock and roll core that is perfect for The Lemon Squares. And there’s something very unexpectedly poignant about it, now that we know all that Britney has been through.”
Along with releasing the album version of Now More Than Ever, Early has plans to hit the road on a North American tour this fall. Seattle, Los Angeles, Austin, and Chicago – Oct. 5 at Thalia Hall – are among the great cities where Early will perform.
