The latest episode of On Cinema at the Cinema was one for the record books. Not only did Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington share their popcorn ratings for the films Smurfs: The Lost Village and The Case for Christ – both five baggers – but Heidecker also announced his plans to start filming new episodes of Decker – now in its fifth season – before revealing the highly-anticipated results of his recent face-skin transplant surgery at the end of the show.
Fans will remember that Heidecker suffered severe burns on his face, and much of his body, due to being caught in a fire – which also destroyed Turkington’s world-renowned video collection – at the Victorville Film Archives near the end of the previous season of On Cinema. Last week, it was announced that his Dekkar bandmate Manuel was selected to be the donor of the skin that would repair Heidecker’s badly damaged face and, on yesterday’s episode, Tim’s transformation was revealed.
After hosting much of the show wearing a mask reminiscent of the one Tom Cruise – Heidecker’s favorite actor and the namesake of his late son – wore in Vanilla Sky, Heidecker delicately removed his facial prosthetic as his closest friends and family watched with bated breath. “You like that,” he asked with a giant grin much like that of Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s Batman. “I’m really happy,” Heidecker said with tears in his eyes after finally getting a look at himself in a makeshift mirror brought to him by impersonator/actor/waiter Mark Proksch.
As if all this wasn’t enough, this week’s On Cinema also featured a new segment from Turkington – entitled “Road to Hollywood” – during which Clark Gable’s rise to fame was examined. Heidecker also shared information about his EDM-heavy music festival the Electric Sun Desert Music Festival which takes place in Apple Valley in just a few weeks.
