Eight episode ‘Roseanne’ revival to air on ABC in 2018

Roseanne revival

The news of a possible Roseanne revival, which began making the internet rounds late last month, has had fans of the hit 90s sitcom in a bit of a tizzy. After shopping the project to networks including Netflix, the series reboot of sorts will officially be hitting small screens everywhere on ABC sometime in 2018.

The Roseanne revival has already locked down the original cast — Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Michael Fishman (D.J.) and Lecy Goranson (Becky). According to Deadline, the series has also booked Sarah Chalke, better known as the original show’s “second Becky” or “new Becky,” to appear on the show in some capacity.

It looks like Goranson, who solely filled the shoes of Becky for the first five seasons until she left to attend college, will play the character but word has not yet been publicly finalized. Chalke (second Becky), who came aboard and split the role with Goranson in Season 8, took up the complete duties of the Connor’s first born until the series ended after Season 9.

“The Conners’ joys and struggles are as relevant — and hilarious — today as they were then, and there’s really no one better to comment on our modern America than Roseanne,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.

Fans of the show may remember that Dan had actually died of a heart attack and only appeared in Season 9 as a manifestation of Roseanne’s writing. However, the character will indeed be alive in the revival — potentially thanks to Barr’s 2009 explanation that the character faked his own death.

The Roseanne revival will be exec produced by Barr, Gilbert, Tom Werner, Bruce Helford, Whitney Cummings and Tony Hernandez. It will return for a mid-season premiere in 2018 (formal date TBD) on ABC.
