Improvisational Cellist, Helen Gillet, has gathered an incomparable quartet of musicians to form the group, Tephra Sound – a term that describes the matter that volcanoes emit during an eruption. This one-of-a-kind project is coming to Chicago on Aug. 19 for a special performance at Constellation.
The band is comprised of world-class musicians who have played with some of the top artists in the world. Drummer/percussionist/vocalist Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Ivan Neville, Parliament Funkadelic, Nth Power), Keyboardist Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Matt Chamberlain) and multi-instrumentalist Jessica Lurie (Tiptons Saxophone Quartet, Indigo Girls) will join Gillet (Judith Owen, Fermin, Arcade Fire, Hurray for the Riff Raff) in Chicago, as they previously did for performances in Kansas City, St. Louis and Madison.
The improvisational quartet combines elements of classical music, jazz, funk, rock and punk to create untraditional rhythms that accompany melodies that captivate, intrigue and leave listeners wanting more. Adding to the mystique of the project, each song on the group’s new album, Horizon, is named after active volcanoes all over the world.
