In the moments before Daryl Hall and John Oates took the stage at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Tinley Park on Aug. 26, 2021, giant video screens displayed the sights and sounds of a collection of the duo’s biggest songs. This proved to be less of a trip down memory lane and more of a preamble to the proceeding concert which included an avalanche of hits.

“Maneater” opened the show and also offered the first of many spotlights by the group’s longtime saxophone player Charlie DeChant. Before sharing the dizzying love song “Out of Touch,” Hall referenced the early days of the Tinley Park venue – which opened as the World Music Theatre in 1990 – saying that it was good to be back at “The World.”

He added, “We’re going to do lots of songs for you today.”

“Method of Modern Love” and “Say It Isn’t So” – complete with yet another sax solo and a triple threat of guitar wizardry from Hall, Oates and Shane Theriot – were among those songs as was the group’s cover of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,” written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The song – first made famous by another legendary duo, the Righteous Brothers – gave the two vocalists the freedom to show-off their range as individuals as well as their uncanny gift of harmonizing as a duo.

“Thank you for coming out on this beautiful summer evening,” Oates said.

Hall and Oates’ vocals once again shined on “She’s Gone” as their highs and lows bounced and weaved through the infectious chorus. The Abandoned Luncheonette tune’s climactic climbing key change had fans cheering, but it was the next song, “Sara Smile,” that induced the need to dance from audience members who rose to their feet as Hall tickled the ivories and Oates nurtured slinky riffs to purr from his Fender.

Earlier in the night, UK rockers Squeeze shared their own hit-filled set. “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell), “Cool for Cats” and the perennial fan favorite “Tempted” were among the highlights.

Hall & Oates’ set didn’t end before the crowd got the opportunity to sing along with even more of their favorite classics including “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” and “You Make My Dreams.” All and all it was apparent that the night belonged to lovers; lovers of great music and lovers of the communal experience that is sharing a moment in song.
