On May 31, music fans will have a new written offering detailing the brilliance of the Godmother of Punk as journalist Caryn Rose’s book Why Patti Smith Matters is set to be released via University of Texas Press.
The book examines Smith’s impact on rock and roll, visual art, and poetry and is the first book on the singer-songwriter that features comprehensive, original research and interviews with primary sources. Rose even includes information from her exclusive interview with Bruce Springsteen about the making of the hit, “Because the Night.”
“I was eager to take on the formidable task of chronicling Patti Smith’s career because aside from Smith’s own work, the existing scholarship didn’t possess the kind of informed, careful perspective of her life and art that it deserves,” said Rose in a statement.
Rose’s work has appeared in such publications as Pitchfork, MTV News, Billboard, Village Voice, Vulture, and many more. She is the author of Gas, Food, Wifi: On The Road in the American Southwest, Raise Your Hand: Adventures of an American Springsteen Fan in Europe, One Girl, One Team, One City: The Best of metsgrrl.com, 2006-2012, A Whole New Ballgame and B-Sides and Broken Hearts.
