Armed with a slew of fresh material from their new album, The Tipping Point, the group’s first in 17 years, Tears for Fears brought their aptly named The Tipping Point World Tour to the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Tinley Park on June 16 for an evening of great music spanning a 40-year career. Garbage was along for the ride filling their opening set with a collection of hits and tunes from their heavy-hitting 2021 album, No Gods No Masters.

Tears for Fears – Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith – opened their headlining set with “No Small Thing” and “The Tipping Point,” a pair of songs from their latest release, before playing the perennial fan favorite, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” Orzabal joked with fans about how Smith’s “magic wand” – unfortunately made from wax – was no match for the sweltering summer heat. He went on to ask everyone to shout their first name, to get better acquainted. “Sowing the Seeds of Love” and “Head Over Heels” were further highlights of the setlist.

Garbage – who started out in Chicago – also delivered a stellar set. The band – Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, Butch Vig and touring musician Eric Avery – payed tribute to the late Depeche Mode musician, Andy Fletcher, with a “Personal Jesus” interlude during their Version 2.0 track “Wicked Ways.” They later dedicated “Queer” to their LGBTQ fans who’ve stuck with them since the nineties and “Wolves” to Manson’s longtime friend Chris Connelly (Revolting Cocks, Ministry, Sons of the Silent Age) who was present in the crowd. A rare performance of “The World Is Not Enough” and a gripping rendition of “Push It” added to the fun.
