On Saturday, July 23, 2022, The Psychedelic Furs stopped by the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago for a highly-anticipated performance. Punk rockers X were along for the fun and their opening set was full of magical moments and rapid-fire, rockabilly-infused jams.
“ALPHABETLAND,” “White Girl” and “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes” were early favorites in X’s set. Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom and D. J. Bonebrake created a club feel in the venue by bringing fans closer into the show with personal waves and shared glances with those on the rail. While the set belonged to X, the evening’s lighting engineer “won a prize” from Doe for adding to the vibe of “Come Back to Me” by answering the call to activate the “beautiful mirror ball” during the chorus. After the song – which featured a killer sax solo from Zoom – Doe noted that the “ghosts of the Aragon” were probably really happy with how the magical lighting added to the performance.
Several xylophone solos from Bonebrake, Exene and Doe’s dueling vocals and Zoom’s fast fingers on the guitar were further highlights of the set.
“Thanks for being here early enough to see us play,” said Exene mid-way through X’s set adding that the band is very happy to be on tour with The Psychedelic Furs.
The Psychedelic Furs – led by Richard and Tim Butler – are currently on the latest leg of their Made of Rain Tour in support of their 2020 album of the same name, the group’s first new release in almost 30 years. With a collection of new tunes and their incomparable catalog of hits at the ready, The Furs delivered a crowd-pleasing set spanning their entire career.
